Century' at the BAFTA Headquarters, organised by Paul Balmer
and Judy Caine of Music on Earth Productions Ltd. February 19th

Weedon, Julian Bream and Martin Taylor.

Player ever, Django Reinhardt in 1942 when Django and Stephane

stayed in England. Bert and Julian (the brilliant Classical
Guitar player) first met in June 1949 when they were doing the
backing music for a play called 'Blood Wedding' by Frederico
Garcia Lorca. Julian also played with Stephane on the 'Parkinson
TV Show'. Martin Taylor, one of the great Jazz players, also
did many tours with Stephane and played in the break during
the showing of the wonderful video of their friend Stephane
Grappelli's life story. The main topic of conversation was obviously
. . . guitars, guitars and more guitars. |

| King
Rat Bert Has a "Ball"
"The Grand Order of Water Rats" is a Showbiz Charitable Organisation
founded in 1889 by a group of Top Variety Performers. Each
year the Water Rats elect a "King Rat" to head the Order.
At the end of his year, the King Rat runs a Ball for members
of the Order and Guests - normally around 1200 attend this
special event.
This
Photograph was taken on November 29th 1992 at the Grosvenor
House Hotel, Park Lane, London, the year that Bert was King
Rat. It was his fellow artistes' way of paying a Tribute to
him, with the help of Bert's close friend Jim Marshall (Marshall
Amplification) who supplied all the amplifiers. The evening
ended with all the talented Star Guitarists joining in and
playing Guitar Boogie Shuffle, which was a big hit for Bert,
as it was the first ever British Guitar record to get into
the top ten charts.

Canterbury
May 29th 1982.
His Holiness John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury,
Dr. Robert Runcie.
Bert
Weedon performed a show for the thousands of people who gathered
in Canterbury for the visit of John Paul II. Bert ended his
show with an adaptation of when "The Saints Go Marching
In" to "When John Paul Comes Marching In" and
when His Holiness departed he said a "ThankYou" and
gave Bert a special Blessing. A very moving experience. |

This
picture and quotes are from an interview by Neil Duncanson.
"Spotlight on Bert Weedon, legendary King of the Strings.
More recently his '22 Golden Guitar Greats' displaced Led
Zeppelin to reach the number one spot in the UK album chart,
selling a massive 250,000 copies."

The
Early Years
This picture was used on the cover of the sheet music for Blue
Guitar and was taken at a Radio session in 1959.
This guitar was used on the recording of Guitar Boogie Shuffle,
and Bert was the first British guitarist to get a solo number
in the hit parade with his recording. A newspaper quote from
Bert at that time -
"I own five Guitars, but this one I use on TV is my favourite.
Its German-made: all the metal parts are gold-plated. It's actually
worth about £150, but to me it's priceless and irreplaceable."
(That was the cost over 40 years ago, have a guess as to its
worth today!) |

Three virtuosos
Ivor Mairants, Les Paul and Bert Weedon in 1952. As always
when dedicated Guitarists meet, their attention is always drawn
to one thing - a captivating body, a long slender neck, a heavenly
shape, which one can hold in ones arms. . .
Its a Guitar of course !!!! |
